Elba is an ideal island for hikers and trekkers. Numerous numbered and mapped trails criss-cross the coastline and the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
On Elba, you can find easy trails ideal for beginners, but also challenging trails for more experienced hikers. Among the most important trails is the GTE (Gran Traversata Elbana), which retraces an ancient path used by shepherds in the past and crosses Elba from west to east, crossing the island’s main heights and mountains.
Along the routes you will encounter Churches, Hermitages, Bunkers, Fortresses, Lighthouses, Caprili, and historical remains from various eras, Elba having been dominated and lived in by various peoples, including: Etruscans, Romans, Pisans, Ligurians and Spaniards. The paths often lead into the Mediterranean maquis, which in spring offers unique landscapes rich in blossoms and fills the sense of smell with its pleasant fragrances from the aromatic herbs that grow wild in the area. Since Elba is rich in promontories, it is enough to walk along a path and discover breathtaking panoramic views, because Elba has a wonderful sea, but its hinterland characterises and enhances it even more.
